Read on the definition of scarcity in austrian economics. I’m not being utilitarian. But I see where you’re coming from and even putting semantics aside, it still doesn’t work. Your hyperbole would better describe someone literally hacking a developer’s laptop and siphoning unpublished code from there, when in fact they were downloading open source from GitHub. Remember that these same principles also apply to movies, music, books etc. The real hypocrisy here is that the state goes after individuals for downloading “copyrighted files” and don’t enforce their own made up rules when it comes to their close big tech friends.
So if wooden crates are not scarce, and you come into my house and take mine without permission then it is just? Very utilitarian of you.
“Code” is just a file in a computer, just like music, photos etc. copying it does not damage or erase the original, so it fits more the definition of an idea than property. If it can be perfectly replicated it’s not scarce, and property exists to deal with scarcity only, not convenience or other arbitrary cases. This is one of the reasons why Bitcoin is a big deal, digital scarcity was basically nonexistent before blockchains.
Once again, code is not an idea. It is very much a specific unique thing. Two OS kernels are not the same, their idea may be but that is not what I am argueing for. So you and I are not debating the same topic

Why would it feel wrong? I think it really is the best way for a quick reaction. Better to comment and the best to quote, in order to show real appreciation. Financial incentives are ok, to reward work. But whoever considers some socialmedia note as work, should really rethink their value system.
